The History of Augill Castle
Augill Castle, a captivating wedding venue nestled in the scenic tranquillity of Kirkby Stephen within the Lake District, boasts a vibrant history that dates back to the 19th century. Constructed in 1841 by John Bagot Pearson, a wealthy wine merchant’s son, the castle was intended as a grand family home, designed to reflect a romantic style akin to a mini fortress. Augill Castle carries the enchanting allure of Gothic Revival architecture, distinguished by its eclectic turrets and castellated towers that have enthralled guests and visitors for decades.
Throughout its existence, Augill Castle has witnessed a myriad of historic developments, often serving as a family residence until the mid-20th century when it transitioned into a more public role. During the Second World War, the castle provided refuge to young evacuees, marking a significant departure from its domestic use. Its transformation into a hotel and eventually a sought-after wedding venue occurred towards the late 20th century, brought about by the vision of its then owners, Simon and Wendy Bennett, who infused the site with hospitality and life.
Strategically located near the small town of Kirkby Stephen, Augill Castle occupies an idyllic position within the broader realm of Cumbria. It is adeptly situated amidst a tapestry of natural beauty, offering wonderful proximity to both the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, thus remaining an attractive focal point for both history enthusiasts and romantic event seekers.
How To Get To Augill Castle
Augill Castle, a renowned wedding venue, is located near the town of Kirkby Stephen in the Lake District.
