Fancy a rustic wedding in England’s most picturesque region? The Lake District has some wonderful barn venues, and over the years I’ve come to know what makes the good ones special.

In this guide I’ll share why a Lake District barn wedding works so well, and my pick of the venues, including one I always get excited about shooting.

Askham Hall is one of those venues that genuinely takes your breath away. I’m always excited when a couple books it. This Grade I listed house sits in a beautiful corner of the Eden Valley side of the Lakes, and it’s a dream to photograph.

What I especially love is the Bank Barn, a Grade II listed building full of rustic charm. It’s the perfect contrast to the main house: warm, atmospheric and brilliant for ceremonies and receptions.

From a photographer’s perspective, the light and backdrops here are unbeatable. Going across the main lawn at sunset creates amazingly atmospheric images. It’s the kind of place where unforgettable moments just happen.

Fairbank Wedding Barn

Fairbank Wedding Barn, renovated in 2020, sits in 370 acres of rolling countryside with uninterrupted views in every direction.

The restored barn and idyllic surroundings make it a romantic spot for a memorable celebration.

Other barn venues worth a look:

  • New House Farm, featuring two barns and located near the stunning lakes of Buttermere, Crummock Water, and Loweswater.
  • Long Acre Barn, a new addition to the market in 2023, situated close to the market town of Penrith and easily accessible via the A66/M6.
  • Paddock Barn, set within 35 acres of land, offering an outdoorsy, festival-style wedding experience.
  • Townhead Estate, located at the southern end of England’s longest lake, Windermere, providing a picturesque setting for your special day.
