Morning Preparations | Wedding Photography Guide

The morning of your wedding is magic. It’s those precious few hours where excitement and anticipation fill the air. Whether you’re a bride surrounded by a flurry of hairspray and giggling bridesmaids, or a groom adjusting your cufflinks while sharing a joke with your best man, this time is the first chapter of your wedding story. And with a few helpful wedding morning tips, it can be a stress-free wedding morning that you’ll look back on with a smile.

I know that in the lead-up to the big day, couples often worry about the “getting ready” part. Will it be chaotic? What if something runs late? Take a deep breath. I’ve got you. In this guide, I’ll share advice from both the bride’s and the groom’s perspective on how to enjoy and optimise your wedding morning. As a photographer who loves candid wedding photography, I promise that the getting ready wedding photos can be some of the most heartfelt images of the day. So let’s make sure your morning is as exciting, relaxed, and photogenic as possible.

The Bride’s Morning: Calm Moments, Joyful Memories

From the soft light coming through your window to the laughter of your bridesmaids, the bride’s wedding morning is all about atmosphere. It’s normal to feel a mix of nerves and excitement as you realise “It’s happening!”. My biggest piece of advice is to savour each moment. Trust your team. Your hair and make-up artists, your maid of honour, your mum. They’re all there to support you. You, in turn, get to sit back, robe on and slippers cosy, and soak in the pampering. This is your time to relax and get ready at a comfortable pace.

I usually arrive during bridal prep and blend into the background, photographing those lovely candid moments: the makeup brush sweeping across your eyelids, the affectionate glance your mum gives you, the bridesmaids popping a bottle of bubbly. You won’t find me asking for poses at this stage. Candid wedding photography means I capture things as they naturally unfold. That genuine wow on your friends’ faces when they see you in your dress for the first time is worth more than any staged shot. Pro tip: if you want a big reveal moment, have your bridesmaids or parents wait until you’re fully ready. Their reactions make for incredible photos.

As things get busy, remember to stay present. It helps to have a well-planned schedule. For instance, aim to have hair and make-up done at least an hour before you need to leave – the more time the better. This buffer gives you time to get into your dress without feeling rushed, and it also allows us to capture some beautiful, relaxed portraits while everything still feels calm and exciting. I’ve seen brides who weren’t rushed enjoy the morning so much more. They had time to breathe, laugh, and even have a quick snack. Yes, do eat something. And don’t worry if there are little hiccups, like a last minute change in the schedule or a touch of rain. It’s all part of the story and often makes for charming memories later.

Top Tips for the Bride’s Wedding Morning:

  • Do a Hair and Makeup Trial: Practice makes perfect! Having trial runs means you know what to expect and how long it takes. This ensures no surprises on the day and a look you absolutely love.
  • Bridesmaids Ready before you : Plan with your MUA and Hair Stylist for your bridesmaids to be ready before you and then they can help….you! That’s the idea and what ‘the-maids-for-the-bride’ are.
  • T-20!: If you work out a rough timetable of what time everyone is to be ready to go to the ceremony or for the cars then take off another 20-30 minutes. There’s always a bunch of little things to do that add up and help to squeeze the time a bit including touch ups. This also gives time for a reveal shot with dad or with your bridesmaids while you’re fresh and relaxed. Being ready before time means it feels much more chilled.
  • Assign a Dress Helper: Those button loops and the bustle can be tricky. Pick a trusted person to be the dress hero who knows how to fasten everything. You’ll feel more confident knowing someone’s got it covered and can do it efficiently.
  • Keep Your Space Charming: A tidy room with natural light will make your photos shine. Hang your dress somewhere pretty and high enough for a gorgeous dress photo. Clear away any clutter or bags so the focus is on you.
  • Have the Details Ready: Gather your jewellery, shoes, perfume, invitations, and other special details in one spot. I love starting the day by photographing these – the little things that mean so much. Having them prepared means I can style and shoot them quickly without bothering you.
  • Take a Moment for Yourself: It might sound impossible amid the excitement, but even a 60-second breather can be grounding. Step aside and gaze out the window or read a short note from your partner. That quiet calm moment makes a beautiful memory and photo before the wonderful whirlwind begins. Also make sure you have something to eat and drink even though the nerves say no!

The Groom’s Morning: Calm, Ready and Excited

Grooms, you haven’t been forgotten. The wedding morning is for you too, and it’s not just about putting on a suit. It’s an experience in its own right. I often find the groom’s prep has a more relaxed energy, but there’s still that buzz of excitement. My advice is to embrace it all. The nerves mean you care, and that’s a good thing.

For many grooms, the morning is spent with your best mates. Maybe it’s your groomsmen, your brother, or your dad helping you out. Enjoy that time together. Some of my favourite groom’s room shots are of the lads having a laugh trying to fold pocket squares, or a proud father helping with a tie. These moments are pure gold and well worth capturing. If no one knows how to pin the buttonhole flower, no problem. Work it out together, have a laugh, and let me capture it.

From a photography point of view, I’ll document the groom’s side just as naturally. I start with the details like the cufflinks, polished shoes, rings, a special watch or personalised gift. While you’re still in your casual wear, I’ll be capturing those touches and the atmosphere around you. Then, as you start getting dressed, I’ll be nearby to catch those key moments – fastening cufflinks, adjusting your tie in the mirror, and taking that deep breath once you’re fully suited up and ready. These moments often end up being some of the most memorable.

Top Tips for the Groom’s Wedding Morning:

  • Choose a Good Space: Get ready somewhere with decent light and enough room. A tidy bedroom or living area with a window is ideal. It means better photos and a more comfortable environment.
  • Lay Out Your Gear: Make sure your suit, shirt, tie, shoes, and all the bits and bobs are organised and pressed. Lay them out neatly for ease in one place.
  • Other Gear: The same goes for your speech! And you may need your sunnies and your phone, too.
  • Don’t Dress Too Soon: Hold off on putting on the jacket and tie until your photographer arrives if timing allows. That way we can capture those final steps of getting ready. Grooms take about seven minutes on average to get ready, rather than the seven hours for the bride. It’s good to tell me when that window is going to be open!
  • Enjoy the Company: Whether it’s jokes, a quick game, or a toast, enjoy the time with your mates. It makes for genuine smiles and eases any nerves.
  • Mind the Little Details: Remove any tags from new clothes beforehand. Double-check special items like cufflinks or socks. Empty pockets of bulky items like phones or wallets for any photos.
  • Eat and Hydrate: Make sure you eat something. A light meal or protein bar and some water or juice will keep you focused and feeling good.

Wedding Morning Tips for a Stress-Free Start

No matter who you are or where you’re getting ready, some advice applies to everyone. The goal is to make your morning smooth, enjoyable, and photo-friendly. Here are some universal wedding morning tips to keep in mind:

  • Start Early and Pad Your Timeline: Give yourself more time than you think you need. It’s nicer to have a cushion to relax. If something unexpected comes up, you’ll handle it with ease.
  • Stay Organised (Have a Checklist): A checklist can be a lifesaver. List must-dos and ask someone to double-check them so you don’t have to worry.
  • Delegate Responsibilities: Assign jobs to trusted friends or family. Someone can keep an eye on time, someone else can be the go-to for vendors. You just enjoy the moment.
  • Set the Mood: Put on music that makes you happy. It helps ease tension and brings good vibes. If you prefer a quieter space, that’s okay too – let your crew know.
  • Be Ready for Emotions: The wedding morning can be surprisingly emotional. Embrace it. Keep tissues or a touch-up kit handy. These moments are real and beautiful.
  • Keep Perspective and Have Fun: Remember the why of the day. If little things go off-plan, let them go. Laugh it off and enjoy the ride. The happier and more present you are, the more radiant your photos will be.
